What’s Happening in Portland in April

UCLA Festival of Film Preservation – April 1-22, 2018

Conservators working at UCLA’s Film and Television Archives have restored 10 important films to like-new condition to stage the 18th touring show. The offerings are very diverse, with comic fare from Laurel & Hardy and Ernst Lubitch Trouble in Paradise, as well as more serious fare such as the 1957 Argentine classic Los Tallos Amargos, and a 1960’s documentary on the murder of the head of Chicago’s chapter of the Black Panthers The Murder of Fred Hampton. Portland Grand Tasting – April 12, 2018

Meet the winemakers of 20 Columbia Gorge wineries and take home a souvenir glass. The Columbia Gorge region straddles the Columbia River between Mt Hood and Mt Adams. The wines are highly varied, since the eastern end of the valley gets 35 inches of rain per year to the eastern foothills of the Cascades and the western end as little as 10 inches The event will be held at 101 N Weidler, and tickets are $30. Portland Pancakes & Booze Art Show—April 13, 2018

70 artists of various genres are gathered in one building to present their work, with a live DJ to provide aural stimulation when the performance artists are taking a break. This traveling show is in Portland for one night only. Hawthorne Theater, 1507 SE 39th Avenue. $10 at the door.

Portland Lindy Exchange – April 20-22, 2018

Swing dancers and aspiring dancers gravitate to Portland over this weekend with activities in 2 ballrooms. This year’s live bands will mix up traditional swing and hot jazz. They are: Sheri Colby & the Racket Makers, Casey McGill & the High 5; Midnight Serenaders; Hot Lovin’ Jazz Babies, and Baby & the Pearl Blowers. Orchid Show & Sale April 20-22, 2018

The Oregon Orchid society is hosting its 75 annual show and sale of these exotic flowers at Aquinas Hall, 340 NE Clackamas, just four blocks north of the hotel. Experts will be on hand to provide propagation tips and “how to’s” and 10 vendors will have booths for collectors.
